As the primary policing entity in the country, AGS’s core functions include: the detection and prevention of crime; ensuring the security of the Republic of Ireland; aiming to reduce the number and incidences of fatal and serious injuries on roads and improving overall road safety; working closely with communities to prevent anti-social behaviour and; the promotion of an-inter agency approach to problem-solving and improving overall quality of life. Through the fostering and maintenance of effective community partnerships, and a more visible Garda presence, AGS has effectively achieved a reduction in the fear of crime and crime itself in communities nationwide.

The Special Detective Unit (SDU) will be the major AGS department involved in the PERICLES project. THE SDU is responsible for the investigation of possible threats to the security of the state and is responsible for the monitoring of persons who could pose a threat to the state’s security on both national and international fronts. The responsibilities and functions of the AGS SDU include counterterrorism operations, counterintelligence and armed response to serious incidents.  In addition, the Emergency Response Unit (ERU), a highly trained and equipped specialist intervention unit is part of SDU.
